Welcome
Welcome to the George C. Pimentel website. Everyone seems to have one now, so why shouldn't he? Even though he died fourteen years ago,
we are receiving an increasing number of requests for information about his life and work.
And it's a way of keeping in touch with old friends.
His research continues to affect today's discoveries in chemistry; his students continue to remember him with affection and gratitude. There's a building named for him on the Berkeley campus, and several awards and events in his honor:
the American Chemical Society's Award in Chemical Education; the IBM-sponsored annual lecture, and the latest,
a prize for a graduating senior at UC Berkeley. This award will be given for the second time at the Chemistry Commencement at UC Berkeley on May 24, 2003, so it seems appropriate to launch the site with the Commencement Address
that George gave there in 1988.
Also on this embryonic site are a brief résumé of his life, one
account of how his influence continues, and a list of his graduate students and other research collaborators at
Berkeley. Many more items are planned - from his scientific bibliography to his (unpublished) short stories;
from the CHEM Study story to his advice to Congress. We welcome comments and contributions. Thanks for visiting.
