Welcome to the George C. Pimentel website!

I created this site in 2003, with high hopes of expanding it to include every aspect of George's remarkable life, and the effect that life has had on individuals and communities ever since.  I started with a handful of seminal items, and so far have made only a few additions reflecting current events like the winners of awards in his name, gatherings held in his honor, and important announcements.  Some day I hope to share much, much more - and your contributions are welcome too.

More than 20 years after his death, George's life is still being celebrated in events, stories, and the many lives he has touched, directly or indirectly.  His spirit and influence are still with us, in science and the world at large.  His research still affects today's discoveries in chemistry, and his students and colleagues remember him with affection and gratitude.  Current students at UC Berkeley take classes in the lecture hall named for him.  His papers are archived in the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley so that scholars can research his life and accomplishments.

On this site you will find information about the awards and events that honor him annually, a list of his students and research collaborators, summaries of his life, his UC Berkeley commencement address, the story of matrix isolation, his vicarious travels to the planet Mars, and other examples of his rich legacy.

Many more items are planned—from his scientific bibliography to his (unpublished) short stories; from the CHEM Study story to the chemical laser; from National Chemistry Day to his advice to Congress, and his philosophy of science. And lots more photos.

I welcome your comments. Thanks for visiting.

Please note that the items on this site are primarily about George's professional life. I'll be glad to answer questions of a purely personal nature or pass on messages to family members if you will write me, Jeanne Pimentel, at .
